the-cherale-tee
The Cherale Tee

The image on this shirt is a woodcut from 1537.

It comes from a book by Johannes Dryander, a doctor in Marburg, Germany. He dissected human heads and had the pictures made from what he found, one layer at a time. It was one of the first books ever made about the inside of the human head, six years before Vesalius, the guy everyone normally credits with mapping out the human body like this.

This particular woodcut spoke to me because it's horrifying at the same time as it is strangely beautiful, and deals with the voice (note the close up of the tonsils on the left). When I first saw it, I found myself feeling pulled into this cadaver's throat, pulled into an eternity of abyssal darkness from which I could never emerge.

So I used it for the cover of my book, The Cherale.

You don't have to read the book to appreciate this design though. In fact I made this tee because of how much I love this print.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0763/2814/1078/files/unisex-garment-dyed-heavyweight-t-shirt-black-front-6ac2b2a332d37.jpg?v=1791144631
